Which is why my preferred ending, by a long shot, is ending C. I mean, sure, it freed her from Tyrann, but I don't get the sense that her post-Tyrann life is that much better, qualitatively speaking. Maybe that's why we're led down the path of resurrecting Nier, but again, resurrecting him makes it feel like the sacrifice wasn't necessary in the first place. So what was the point of Nier's sacrifice? Did it really ease Kaine's suffering in any meaningful way? It's hard to tell that it did. I get the sense from Yonah's journal entries that she's perhaps slightly more compassionate at times, but leading a "normal human life" she ain't. She appears to still be a foul-mouthed mass murderer who does nothing but kill Shades all day.
He does so (and I thought the deletion of your save file was an amazing, bold statement by the game-the sacrifice felt truly meaningful), and we jump to three years later, and Kaine is.the same person, it seems.

Think about it: with ending D, we are told that Nier can sacrifice himself to free Kaine of Tyrann and allow her to live as a normal human. But tonally speaking, I somehow find endings C and/or D much more palatable and thematically aligned with the game's narrative up to that point-the tone and "messaging" of ending E felt way off to me. Those facts are immutable, and narratively speaking that makes sense. Weiss is gone, Yonah is dying, the shades have all gone berserk now that the Shadowlord is gone, and the Black Scrawl will eventually lead to the replicants' extinction. This isn't because everything is still completely fucked (as many others have noted)-the ultimate outcome is still humanity's doom in every ending. But I didn't feel like it was actually any more positive at its core, and in fact it made me feel perhaps sightly worse.
